Hobart

Located at the mouth of the Derwent River and at the foot of Mt. Wellington (1.270 m) the city of Hobart, founded in 1804 by Colonel David Collins, is the capital of Tasmania (TAS) and Australia’s 2nd oldest city.

With a population of only 190,000 Hobart is a city that enjoys an unequalable quality of life that is removed from the hustle and bustle of the other Australian capital cites. Many of the original stone buildings built during the early years of settlement and have been converted into cafés, art galleries and restaurants.

Hobart’s climate is mild, cooler than the other states and with 4 seasons. It is very unusual for it to snow in the city of Hobart but it is very common to see snow on Mt Wellington during the winter.

Hobart is world famous for the “Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race” which leaves Sydney on December 26th (Boxing Day); the arrival of the yachts is celebrated with the Hobart Summer Festival – ‘The Taste’, a 7 day summer gastronomy festival that is held from late December to early January. Another festival that is internationally famous is Tasmania's premier state-wide cultural event – “10 Days on the Island Festival”.
